Three and a Half Hours on Friday: Planning Stillwater's Homecoming Weekend Around Walkaround

How long does a house decoration that's been under construction since early September stay on public view? The OSU Alumni Association lists Walkaround for Friday, Oct. 23, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Greek Neighborhood. That window is the most fixed part of Oklahoma State's 105th Homecoming, which runs Oct. 18 through 24 under the 2026 theme "The Code Calls Us Home."

Saturday is less certain. The Sea of Orange Parade has a set start time, but the rest of the day depends on a kickoff the Big 12 held back until Sunday, Oct. 18. That makes Friday night the easiest part of the weekend to plan down to the minute, and Saturday a day you plan around a single number you check on the morning you head out.

What Fills the Greek Neighborhood on Friday

Walkaround is the Friday-evening tradition where fraternity and sorority students put up the house decorations they've been building for visitors. Visit Stillwater's 2026 Homecoming Week listing says Greek houses and residential homes become the displays. Each fraternity pairs with a sorority, and the pair builds a decoration, or dec, in the fraternity's front yard. According to The O'Colly's look at what Walkaround costs, the crowds pack University Boulevard and the houses work on their decs from the first week of September through the end of October.

The building technique is called pomping. An earlier O'Colly report on pomping describes tissue-paper squares twisted into cones, pushed into chicken-wire frames, and glued in place, often following computer-designed, color-coded patterns. That report also said chapters couldn't require more than 10 pomping hours a week, and that Homecoming rules allowed point deductions or disqualification for breaking the limit.

That O'Colly cost story put a price on that labor by going through the ledgers of two fraternities, Phi Delta Theta and Lambda Chi Alpha:

  • The two houses spent more than $44,000 combined on their decs, before renting lifts and light kits.
  • More than $13,000 of that went to tissue paper alone.
  • Each dec ran more than $20,000, and the rentals could add up to $12,000.
  • Each house got a $2,700 stipend from the Alumni Association that year, or $5,400 per pairing.

Set against those figures, the stipend didn't cover even the tissue paper. Those figures come from an earlier season, not this one. The Alumni Association now describes a $12 million Homecoming and Student Programs Endowment campaign, meant in part to offset student organizations' costs, but its page gives no allocation for 2026. What the O'Colly figures still show is the ratio: roughly two months of building and five figures of material for one Friday-evening showing.

Last Year's Results Make a Good Route for Friday

No 2026 pairings had been published as of mid-October. The 2025 results still give you a route through the Greek Neighborhood that doesn't depend on wandering. OSU News reported 12 fraternity and sorority pairings for the 104th Homecoming, and the Alumni Association Chair's Cup top five finished in this order:

  1. Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Kappa Alpha
  2. Kappa Delta and Alpha Gamma Rho
  3. Kappa Alpha Theta and FarmHouse
  4. Alpha Delta Pi and Beta Theta Pi
  5. Chi Omega and Phi Delta Theta

Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Kappa Alpha also won the 2025 VIP House Decoration Award, and Kappa Alpha Theta and FarmHouse took Engineering Excellence. Pairings change from year to year, so this list tells you which houses had strong decs last year, not where this year's winners will be. Since decs sit in fraternity front yards, last year's top five fraternities are an easy set of addresses to anchor a loop.

Friday has more going on than Walkaround. The Alumni Association schedule puts the Homecoming Pep Rally and Orange Reflection on the same night, though their times and locations hadn't been posted as of mid-October. Visit Stillwater also lists the Joe State Tailgate at Eskimo Joe's that Friday, with free, all-ages outdoor live music. With Walkaround ending at 9 p.m., the order you do these in matters. The decs are the one thing that disappears when the window closes.

Saturday Waits on Sunday's Call

The Oct. 24 game against Colorado at Boone Pickens Stadium was one of the Big 12's six-day designations. As Sports Illustrated's Oklahoma State coverage explained on Oct. 12, that meant the TV network and kickoff time wouldn't be set until Sunday, Oct. 18. After that announcement, the time is posted on the official OSU football schedule, and it's the number the rest of Saturday hangs on.

Here's which parts of Saturday are fixed and which move with kickoff:

Saturday, Oct. 24

Time and place

Set by

Sea of Orange Parade

9 to 11 a.m., from 9th and Main north to Hall of Fame Avenue

Fixed

POSSE lots open

8 a.m.

Fixed

Park and Ride from 7th and Lewis

Starts three hours before kickoff, runs until 30 minutes after kickoff, then resumes in the third quarter

Kickoff

Cowboy Corral

Saturday, time per Alumni Association updates

Schedule

OSU vs. Colorado

Kickoff time announced Sunday, Oct. 18; Boone Pickens Stadium

Big 12

Do the arithmetic with this season's earlier home games. Visit Stillwater's game-day guide shows Oregon on Sept. 12 and UCF on Oct. 10 both kicked off at 11 a.m. An 11 a.m. kickoff on Homecoming Saturday would start the Park and Ride at 8 a.m., an hour before the parade steps off. The parade's posted window would then end right at kickoff, with fans heading to the stadium while the parade crowd is still on Main Street. A later kickoff splits the day into two parts, a downtown morning and a stadium afternoon or evening. The parade time doesn't move either way. What changes is how much open time sits between the parade and the game.

The Park and Ride boards at 7th and Lewis, a few blocks off the parade route, which is handy if you watch the parade and then head to the game. Spaces OSU hasn't reserved or restricted are first-come, first-served, and campus restrictions still apply.

What to Check Thursday Night

Some Saturday details were still blank at the start of the week. The game-day guide listed the City of Stillwater's Homecoming safety measures as "Coming Soon," so Main Street closure times hadn't been published yet. Here's where updates are posted:

  • Kickoff and TV: the okstate.com football schedule, updated after the Big 12's Sunday announcement.
  • Street closures: the City of Stillwater's road closures page, plus the City safety section of Visit Stillwater's game-day guide.
  • Event times and changes: the OSU Alumni Association's Orange Connection app, which the Association says carries the full Homecoming event guide and updates through the weekend.
  • Parade route: the Sea of Orange Parade page lists the 9th and Main start and the run north to Hall of Fame Avenue through Downtown Stillwater.

Friday's plan can be done tonight. Walkaround runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Greek Neighborhood, last year's top fraternities are good stops to anchor your loop, and the Eskimo Joe's tailgate and the Pep Rally fit around those hours. Saturday's plan comes together once you've looked up one kickoff time.
